Dometic Recall

About the Dometic Recall...

RV refrigerators are different from household refrigerators. They cool by heating a sealed unit attached to the back of the refrigerator with either a flame or an electric heating element. The sealed unit is called the "Cooling Unit"and it contains a mixture of Hydrogen, Ammonia, Water and an anti-corrosive agent "Sodium Chromate". When heated to operating temperature the inside of the cooling unit reaches a pressure of approximately 350psi. The Dometic Recall includes refrigerators that have a factory defect (a bad weld). These refrigerators may develop fatigue cracks on the boiler tube of the cooling unit which will allow Hydrogen and Ammonia to leak out. If this mixture contacts a source of heat such as an open flame, spark, or heating element, a fire will occur !

The Dometic issued "Recall Kit" is a mandatory safety device designed to keep the refrigerator and RV from burning in the event of a cooling unit leak located at the defect area. It does not repair the defect. If your refrigerator's cooling unit develops a leak it will stop cooling and will need to be replaced in order to function again.

Below is the information from the NHTSA website on a recall of certain Dometic refrigerators.

To find out if your refrigerator is included in the recall look at the data sticker located inside. Obtain the model number and first three digits of the serial number to compare with the RED list below.

If the recall applies to you, Dometic is issuing a "Recall Kit". The kit adds a secondary enclosure around the burner. Also included is a thermal disk and heat sensitive fuse. These devices are installed near the burner and boiler tube. 12 volt power is routed through them to the lower control board. In the event of a fire, One or both of these devices will open stopping the flow of power to the lower control board. If the gas valve is open it will shut. If the refrigerator was operating on 120VAC, power to the electric element will be shut off.

If your refrigerator is on the list, Dometic recommends that you not run the refrigerator at all. If you must, you should operate it on electric only. Go to the rear of the refrigerator and close the gas shut-off knob located on the gas valve.  RV Country is a Dometic dealer and authorized warranty service center.

Here's the good news!  The recall kit is supplied free of charge, and Dometic pays us directly for the labor to install it!  The installation only takes about half an hour.  We make it quick and easy, so don't delay, take care of your safety today.
